The room was dark, the air thick with the scent of damp walls and stale blood. A faint sliver of moonlight slipped through the cracked window, illuminating the frail figure curled up on the cold floor.
A girl lay still, her body aching from fresh bruises blooming across her skin. Her lip was split, a dull throb pulsing with every shallow breath she took. The torn sleeve of her dress clung to her shoulder, where purple and blue marks painted her like an unwanted canvas.
Pain had become familiar-too familiar.
Her fingers trembled as she traced the old scars on her wrist, memories of nights just like this one. Nights when survival felt more like punishment than mercy.

"She should be grateful we even keep her," her aunt spat. "Like her parents were anything special."

She squeezed her eyes shut, but the memories still flashed behind her eyelids-twisted metal, smoke curling into the sky, blood staining the pavement. The world had called it an accident.
But she knew better.
It was a murder. A calculated, ruthless execution. And the people responsible were still out there, walking free.
A tear slipped down her cheek, but she wiped it away quickly. Weakness had no place here.
She would endure.
Because one day, she would find out who killed them. And when that day came, she wouldn't be the one lying on the floor.
